Project Description:
Unearthing Our Joy was a vibrant, multi-layered stage production created to celebrate the strength, resilience, and shared stories of women—past and present. Developed by Utopia Theatre’s Community Ensemble and performed as part of Sheffield City Council's Cultural Activation programme, the play honoured International Women’s Day through powerful storytelling, live performance, and movement.

As the choreographer, I was responsible for developing and directing the physical language of the production. My work focused on creating emotionally resonant, culturally rooted movement sequences that elevated the narrative and reflected the diverse backgrounds of the ensemble. Drawing on Afro-contemporary dance, improvisation, and expressive gesture, the choreography served as a bridge between spoken word, music, and collective memory.

This project allowed me to collaborate closely with community performers, some of whom had never performed on stage before. It was a powerful opportunity to use movement as a tool for expression, empowerment, and connection, while contributing to a meaningful citywide celebration of women’s voices and lived experiences.
